Choosing fabric for hand embroidery in a UK climate
Humidity and central heating both affect natural fibres. For beginners we recommend a mid-weight cotton or linen blend that holds a hoop well without fighting the needle.
Very open weaves look beautiful for sashiko-style work but can frustrate first satin-stitch attempts. Dense cotton is kinder for early satin and stem stitch.
Pre-wash only when the finished piece will be washed later. For framed work, a light press and careful transfer method usually matter more than laundry prep.
Keep scraps labelled by fibre. Mixing wool and cotton in the same slow-stitch collage is fine if you accept different drape and dye behaviour.
Shopping in Bristol: we keep a short list of reliable grounds at the studio. Students on the Four-Week Pathway receive a simple fibre guide in week one.
